Best of British

I’ve just got back from the U.S where I saw this quote by Tom Ford:

“British people still wear clothes. By clothes I mean actual clothes: jackets and shirts and ties and suits. The spirit of Beau Brummell is still visible. English men make an effort. We’ve lost that in the U.S. Everyone is more concerned with being comfortable.”

Whilst I personally don’t agree with this statement, some of the best dressed people I have met are American, it certainly got me thinking. What is it that is so desirable about a British Tailored suit?

If we look back to history the traditional business suit originated in England in the 19th century. Beau Brummell became known for introducing this to the British Gentleman and the trend spread across Europe and then into America. I suppose like anything, the county of origin has a huge impact on the customer, keeping with tradition from the place of conception. It feels more authentic and established. If you want the best pasta you would go to Italy so when you think ‘suit’ you would generally link it to Savile Row.

With over 200 years of history surrounding the row it, it’s the initial instant association we make. There is greater trust and expectation when dealing directly with original source. It’s tried and tested, there is less risk.

Why Savile Row?

  1. Selection – Some of the best cloth mills in the world are in the UK and Ireland.

  2. Quality – You are getting the best tailors, trained to the highest level.

  3. Standard – Savile Row has quality control and an association that maintains this.

  4. Fit – Our jackets are traditionally structured so that they give you a great silhouette.

  5. Desirability – The ‘James Bond’ effect. Sure, we all want to look THAT smooth!

2016 is certainly is a good time to be British, right now when it comes to Music, Fashion, Film and Sport we have become a force to be reckoned with. Anthony Joshua claimed his first title belt, I was ringside and the atmosphere was electrifying. Follow that with Danny Willett winning the Masters. The Premier league is arguably the best league in the world for football and in music we’ve seen Sam Smith awarded an Oscar.

When it comes to finesse, drive and excellence we’ve got it nailed. British fashion is leading the way. And especially in my world of tailoring, Savile Row has become the most famous place on the planet for a great suit.
